Renovation of an Existing Building to the First Zero Emission Building in Urumqi (Nanshan)

For the first project, in Nanshan the south of Urumqi, an agricultural education centre was transformed into the first zero emission building in the provincial capital. While the current methods for energy retrofit reduce the energy demand by about 50% we showed in our project that heat energy savings of 85 % can be reached at reasonable cost.

The heat demand in the very cold winters is supplied by solar heating with an innovative seasonal storage. The entire demand of electricity is provided by a photovoltaic system. The heating energy demand was reduced by optimizing the building design, improving insulation of walls and windows as well as installing floor heating and a heat recovery system. Starting in 2011, annual emissions of 88 tonnes of CO2 are avoided.
